To see Aboriginal art with a difference, call in at Merrepen Arts, located in the Daly River area. Most of the arts centre artists are women who produce screen-prints, batik fabric designs, and hand-printed linocut fabric.
You can purchase authentic Aboriginal acrylic paintings, screen prints, batik and hand printed fabric and shirts, silk paintings, weavings and cards. Paintings produced by the women (and a small number of men) are very different to what is generally expected of Aboriginal art.
It is recommended to call the Art Centre prior to your arrival in Merrepen.
The annual Merrepen Arts Festival incorporates both the art and various guest appearances such as the Darwin Symphony Orchestra. The festival is usually held over the first weekend of June each year.
