    About Tathra Wharf

    Tathra is a coastal town rich in history and traditions of the sea. Tathra Wharf is a prime spot to watch the whale migration in Spring, and its historic timbers have plenty of room for spectators. While the Wharf stands proud above the waters, below is a wonderland for scuba divers and snorkellers. Migratory whales, fur seals and fairy penguins from the colony on Montague Island sometimes frequent the waters around the Wharf and are quite willing to let you be a part of their underwater world. Tathra's red rock shoreline was a tough place to build a wharf in the 1800s, but the district’s farmers desperately needed a place to export their wares. Demand quickly outgrew the wharf and it was extended in 1912, including yards and watering troughs for stock. In 1914 it was the place for an emotional farewell for the district’s soldiers as they went off to the First World War. Commercial shipping waned in the 1950's and it's just the recreational boaters who pull up alongside, and climb the ladder to visit The Wharf Local Coffee Bar and Gallery. ...
